Hate these lists. The only purpose they serve is to stroke the ego of its author.
"look how many albums i have lilstened to this year, i bet YOU havent heard these albums.......but I have."
These lists, unless written for smash hits, are usually full of nu wave or low wave or high flange grunge or whatever it is that happens to be flavour of the month(or year) for post grad art students/NME editors/Douche bags.
They arent what they claim to be, which is a list of great albums released in 1 calander year. If that was the case Beyonce wouldnt be 20 places higher than White Denim and PJ Harvey in Rolling Stones list....and Superheavy (the abortion project by Mick Jagger, Joss Stone et al) wouldnt be in it at all.
These lists are just an easy way to end the year for editors of music mags everywhere, an ego stroking device for music snobs and a way music labels can peddle there shit just before christmas.
Now I aint a post grad anything, nor am I a writer or editor for NME. I am one hell of a douche bag though, and with that I give you a pretentious list of albums you probably havent heard, but I have.
The worthy members of such an elite list will follow, but for now lets take a quick look at the musical landscape that was 2011.
It started off badly, as you might expect. Matt Cardle was number 1 in the singles chart. Remember him? (Remember the singles chart?) I have only just found out this person exists. He won X-Factor.
Take That were number 1 in the album charts only to be replaced 1 week into the year by Rhiannas album "loud"
Adeles second album was released a month or two later and is still number one.....it probably is somewhere anyway.
And whenever she wasnt number one, the top spot was filled by the likes of GaGa, Bouble and other idiots.
Away from, the top spot, Elbow released an album at some stage. I cant remember it doing any good. They suffered the same way Snow Patrol did. A band who didnt get much attention during there early career, gained massive critical and public praise for 1 particular album and then slowly faded away into every starbucks playlist this side of costa coffee.
Radoheads album was good. It was called King Of Limbs if i remember rightly. I enjoyed listening to it for free on youtube.
I cant remember if this was the album thom York let people have for free, or bid on like an auction, or exchange nails and hair for a copy........however they decided to flog it, i didnt buy it. so i guess it doesnt make the list.
Or maybe it does....who knows. Not even me. So how would you know. shut up.
REM released what was to be there last album - the universe didnt seem to notice.
Kings Of Leon also continued to butcher what was a great body of work when they released an album in march? Or february? I cant even remember what it was called but in one of there videos they were tryin to be some sort of white Jesus.
Away from stadium rock, somehow old school trance music made its way into hip-hop, killing the genre forever.
SOmeone else who tried to kill off hip-hop was Pink. Oh sorry, I mean "P!nk". She had a greatest hits out. Oh sorry, "Greatest Hits....So Far".
Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Jessie J, Rhianna, JLo, Britney spears and probably many many more female solo artists had stuff in the charts.
But no females in the shortlist for sports personality. Unlucky girls.
Saying that, pj harvey seems to be getting alot of plaudits for her album, let england shake. it is pretty good actually. but is it that good? i dunno, not listened to it for a while. is it as good as black keys? not for me. does that mean it aint worthy of being included? fuck knows.
Now, there is alot of soft 80's style stuff comin out of america at the minute and I cant really get on board with it. Stuff like The Antlers just doesnt float my boat. They are in all the other lists, but not mine.
Its difficult making this list while listening to Ted Nugent. Ted Nugent! So badass.
Miles Kanes album was a bit of a stinker if you ask me....It was alright but no more than that. If you own it, when did you last listen to it? And be honest. Months ago wasnt it. Cos it aint all that. A bit like The Arctic Monkeys album, grew on me for weeks but never quite made it into the realms of "this is a good album". It only just got passed "meh, its ok" before stalling and settling at "its ok, got a few great tunes.....cant remember what theyre called".
The Submarine OST however.....pretty great. 6 songs long, and theyre all great. and the version of piledriver waltz is better than the version that apeared on suck it and see.
(I wrote this about a week ago and I am just re-reading it for the first time before posting it. Since I wrote this I have actually listened to Suck It And see again, and its actually pretty decent boardering on the sublime. See what time does?)
Kasabians album was dreadful in my opinion. 4 albums in, 2 great, 2 poor. thats how I see it. Still a great band live, but on record they can really really piss me off.
Was the Strokes album any good? I think i listened to it once and then decided Julian Casablancas should just go solo and let the others do somethin else. Would benefit everyone.
The Vaccines are meant to be good. aint bothered with em.
The Foo Fighters had an album out....
so did Bjork
Florence and The Machine
Kate bloody Bush
The Horrors album is meant to be really good, and I heard some off it and I really liked it. Not listened to the album in full though, so Horrors fans, your boys aint on the list.
Jayz and Kanye had an album out. Eminem did to. Dr Dre.........didnt, which suprised no one.
Coldplay had an album out. I havent heard any of it. Is it any good?
St Vincent has been raved about by everyone, and i think its garbage. maybe i shouldnt do a music blog cos i clearly hate music.
ergh, what next. Bon Iver. Is it any good? Well, I cant get into it. So no, not on the list.
The Strange Boys had a great album out only the other month called "Live Music". i have heard it described as Exile On main St performed by a bunch of hoodies.
It is a good album, but I dunno, should it be in my list? What hoodies do they wear? Nike or Adidas? If its Fila or Elisse then they are in the list.
Amy Whinehouse died at some point this year, which was a genuine loss to music. She was a right div, but she could really fuckin sing.
She will be missed along with Chriostopher Hitchens, Gary Speed, Ryan Dunn, Heavy D, Steve Jobs (who died on my birthday - probably not what he will be remembered for), Macho Man Randy Savage, Elizabeth taylor, Nate Dogg, Smokin Joe, Henry Cooper & Pete Postlethwaite who all passed away this year. Not all of them involved in music, but RIP all the same. RIP everyone.
There was yet more Jagger related garbage. Swagger jagger was an actual song and there was also a maroon5 song about moving like jagger. jagger, as already mentioned, also released an album which was equally dreadful as the 2 songs just mentioned.
WilLIAM Elliot Whitmore had an album out.
So did Janes Addiction.
Glasvegas...
And to top things off, Hard-Fi had an album out this year.
Inbetween all of this there was some music I actually enjoyed released in 2011. Its hardly been a vintage musical year but even when things are so unbeleivably below average, there are always one or two shining becons.
And here they are, in all there glory, the 5-10 albums that managed to poke there heads out from beneath the quagmmire of cowell infested slurry that has been 2011.
The Beets (stay at home & let the poison out)
Anyone who used to watch Nickelodeon about 15-20 years agp should recognise the name but unfortunatly thats about as far as the Doug references go.
Both albums from this year are jam packed with 1-3minute rackets that grab you bby the collar and drag you back to a simpler, cooler time. The dirty garage sound has never sounded so good nearly 50 years since music like this became popular. And a band that draws there own album covers and has Carlito Cool on em must be great.
Black Lips - arabian mountain
I nearly didnt include this but its to much fun and im still listening to it a good 7 months on.
Extra polish has been added to the 'Lips dirty pop in the form of mark Ronson. A grammy award winning producer and a rag tag bunch like the Black lips sounds like an uneven fit but they seem to of worked brilliantly by striking a perfect balance between Ronsons catchy and clean production and the 'lips raw energy and rock'n'roll spirit.
black keys - el camino
Hit me like a ton of briacks when I first heard it. The first 5 songs alone make this a must have and, if it ever needed proving, the black keys have officially claimed the title of best rock outfit out there at the moment. The White Stripes are gone, but the 'Keys will be here for a bit longer we hope
noel gallaghers high flying birds
Yep. Its great. Its effortless. It is Noel Gallagher.
The production can sometimes seem a bit to much. The over use of strings can sometimes grate and having heard a few b-side form the singles its annoying that Noel has once again made mistakes when choosing his tracklist (Lord Shine A Light on me, bar the horrible title, is a stunning song and really should be on the album).
The intro for "death Of You And Me" alone is enough to make up for the albums downfalls, and with the promise of album #2 to be released in a few months, 2012 could be Noels year.
kurt vile - smoke rig for my halo
A hazy, folky trip into the mind of a bloke called Kurt.
This is not an album to put on and expect instant harmony within its 40 odd minute running time. It needs some of your attention and if you give it what it deserves you will be rewarded.
Simply lovely.
war on drugs - Slave Ambiant
The full imagining of last years EP (which made my list last year), Slave Ambiant is a brilliant mix of folk and krautrock that comes off sounding like Bruce Sprinstein meets NEU!
Each song seems to blend into the next that gives the album a certain atmosphere and drive. Even when it starts sounding dangerously close to early U2, its still fantastic.
white denim - D
Not quite in the same league as Black Keys, but pretty chuffin close. Anyone with an ear for blues rock or 1970's Americana will apreciate the layers upon layers of delicious music that shapes each and every song on here.
Wooden Shjips - West
Argubly there best album so far, I think its there 4th? there grooves seem to have more going on in them. They seem to progress more than in past efforts. Ah fuck this, they are the best psychodelic band around. End of.
This is music to get lost in.
The Arctic Monkeys & Alex Turner - Suck It & See & The Submarine OST
Contray to what I said earlier, Suck It And See is actually really good. And so is the Submarine OST. Turner has a knack for writing songs, which is good when your profession is writing songs.
His voice has developed into a wonderful croon rather than a sheffield scally on the piss and his way with words has become more sophisticated, less of the kebab shops and taxis home, more lost loves and soul searching.
On Suck It And See and Submarine he has written some of his best songs, songs that wont make every teenyboppers wet at the crotch, but songs you imagine he has always wanted to write, songs he wont get bored of playing and you wont get bored of listening to.
Dont beleive the hype.
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Scandalous
Smooth as snake shit and as rock'n'roll as they come. Imagine James Brown jamming with Bo Didley and you are on the right tracks. And if that doesnt sound like something good your a fuckin moron.
The Fleet Foxes album is a worthy mention. Its sophisticated folky shit that sounds bloody wonderful on the perfect day but sometimes like pretentious over stuffed shite - but mainly its good.
Thee Oh Sees latest album, castlemania, is a fantastic summery album with typical west coast vibes you would expect from those lot and PJ Harveys album Let England Shake is really really good, and probably should be on my list but im getting tired now.
The Strange Boys album is also worth a punt.
With that, im off for another month or so unless something comes up.
Hopefully 2012 will be a slightly better year, not just in music, but in everything that makes up our world.
2012 is the last year of the planets existance (according to the "experts"), so before the end lets hope we get a few more classic tunes to soften the blow.
Chow.
This could be anything you want it to be. As of right now, its nothing. An empty vessel of bad grammar littered with doubt.
songs
Some songs then, new and old.
starting with old - a lost classic by the velvet underground.
The band is called smith, there version of "the weight" features on easy rider.
But this song is just verse=middle8-banging chorus-end. and its brilliant.
some new stuff.
new Mazzy Star ffs. its been 15 years! they aint changed one bit.
black keys new one. dancefloor filler.
back to the old. The Standells are considered one of the first punk bands. or pop/punk...... whatever. tthis was there only hit and its a banger.
One of my fave songs performed by Tina Britt. I prefer the obscure mowtown/northern soul versions of this song than steppenwolfs. just sayin like.
New direction by the Black Lips, from there Arabian Mountain album which was out earlier in the year. great video.
First of 2 Noel songs is his re-working of the classic Supersonic
Second Noel song is this bond themey monster. This doesnt feature on his High Flying Birds album so I assume its from his 2nd album which is out next year. the one produced by Amorphous Androgynous.
Speaking of Amorphous....
One of the best songs ever...
New Wooden Shjips. As terrifying and groovy as ever
This will put you in a great mood for the rest of the day

Noel Gallaghers High Flying Birds
Hello and good morning. Have a cup of coffee, make some toast and settle down for the day because tomorrow is a big day.

Song Of The Day: John Cale - Half Past France & Peter Bjorn And John - Amsterdam
Wow its been ages since i posted anything, ive been very busy.
Song of the day today is a 2 parter due to lack of posts recently.
Both chosen because they have "France" and "Amsterdam" featured somewhere in the song. Ive been to both those places recently.

Bucky Lagrange & The Museums - Superhero Telly
New demo from Bucky Lagrange & The Museums (thinking of changing the name of the band - Bucky Lagrange & The Bad Shits. What ya recon?)
Title - Superhero Telly
Writen by - Pete Walsh (10/06/2011)
Date recorded - 10/06/2011
Notes - Bit of info if you want. I woke up this morning, as you do, its part of being a human; and everyone went out by about 12 so I had the place to myself. Sat down with the intention of recording something and spent a few hours comin up with this.
Much like the other songs posted on here this is just a rough demo. Minimal production, rough lyrics (yes, there are proper lyrics in there even if you cant make them out), dodgy "singing" and an overall feel of jipponess that I think sounds boss.)
2 people have heard it and says it sounds like Oasis. Someone else said it sounded like Belle & Sebastian. But that was probably because I was playing Belle & Sebastian. Sebastian took it as an insult. The cunt.
Get on it.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich
Benjamin Francis Leftwich, the singer/songwriter from York has an album on the way.
"Last smoke before the snowstorm" is released July 4th and so the mandatory promotional gigs have recently taken place.
I saw him perform at Manchester's Death Institute and here are a few notes....
Firstly, let me just say that the venue was top draw. Imagine the smallest screen in the old odeon in Chester, but replace the screen with a raised stage, and you got it.
The atmosphere was very relaxed with the majority of the crowed made up of students from the near by Manchester Met Uni. Both Benjamin and his support (who unfortunately I cant remember the name of) were left stunned by a very respectful crowed who lapt up the intimate vibe that was laid on before them.
Whats more, the support was more than the coldplay impersonators i had them down to be.
Made up of one guitarist/vocalist and 1 pianist/backing vocals, they tied in well with Benjamin's solo work and set up the main act well by delighting the crowed with 6 cuts of honest Leeds folk.
By the end of the short set the duo were showered with applause and calls of an encore to be played, but instead they left the stage in a quiet hurry, making sure the appreciative crowed didn't blow there wad to early on!
Which leads me onto Ben's performance.
Having never seen him perform live before (and only having heard a few songs before the gig, all taken from his first EP) I didn't know how long his haunting folk styling would hold my attention.
Well, it did.
Playing somewhere in the region of 12 songs he gave the crowed exactly what they wanted.
Standing in the middle of a stage surrounded by several different guitars, he picked and strummed his way through them in a set that included "1908" & "Butterfly Culture" as well as a few unreleased numbers that went down just as well as the crowed favourites.
The girls cooed with young lust as he sang about broken hearts and promises and the boys nodded in appreciation.
From the first song to the last he held the audiences attention wonderfully well. The occasional nervous glances around the packed out venue soon turned into a confident stare as he realised the silence of the crowed was that of utter admiration.
On 2 occasions Ben stepped away from his several mics and sang out into the open as if he was alone in his room, singing to himself. The transfixed audience realised that these sorts of moments are something to truly appreciate and just stared back - lost in the songs.
If I was to offer any criticism it would be that when he switched to electric guitar for 1 or 2 numbers, it didn't cross over as well as it could of done. Rather than beefing up the songs with added reverb it in fact made the songs sound slightly flat and a bit forced.
But it would be harsh to hold it against this particular one man band who is surly destined for great things.
Folk music in the mainstream again, you better believe it.

New Kasabian
2 new Kasabian songs have made there way online.
Zane Lowe goes on to say "... that is litterely the sound....of people..........smelling......there......own......farts"
That one was called switchblade smile
This one is called Velociraptor...
Bomfunk MC's anyone?
I really liked Kasabians last album "West Ryder..." but having heard these 2 songs I worry they have gone back to the chavy old sound of there second LP "Empire".

Mix tapes and compos
Hes right you know.
I have recently been listening to a CD by a London duo called The Amorphous Androgynous.
the CD is called A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble Exploding Inside Your Mind Vol 1 & 2.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Monstrous-Psychedelic-Bubble-Exploding-Mind/dp/B002KQ5QZG
What we have here is a mix of 40 odd songs (over 80 if you listen to vol 1 & 2 back to back - which might be a bit much), ranging from 60's contempory jazz, american and british psych, a bit of funk, blues, pop, and another dollop of all things obscure.
Its an extremely interesting mix of music, beautifuly mixed together incorporationg the duos various different tastes aswell as there own music at various points in the mix.
I highly reccommend it if you fancy hearing something a bit different to what you might be used to, or if you have any interest in mixing songs.
Heres a small taster
My point is this. These lot have managed to hone in on what makes a great mix of music. Listening to these compilations you never feel the need to skip through to hear the next song or find yourself becoming bored by the sometimes lengthy mix. Infact, what you are doing is looking forward to the different direction the mix is going to take.
It flows throughout, never jolting between songs in a hap-hazzard way, instead smoothly dancing inbetween songs and sounds constantly keeping you interested, and at its best completely transcends all pre conceived notions you may of had with a mix of songs that features such a varied and wide range of music; it all becomes quite mindblowing!
Making a mix tape, cd, or itunes playlist (tapes - you remember them? i want one) is somewhat of a skill.
You need to remove yourself from what you may consider your favourate songs/bands, this will only blind you from what is important and that is the overall sound/vibe of the collection of songs.
I few things need to be taken into consideration.
The occasion or the person the mix is for should be at the forefront of your mind when you are making it, even if its for yourself. Consider where you will be or what you could be doing when you want to listen to the mix. Consider the type of person and there personality when you are making a mix for someone else - throw in a few suprises but try and keep the songs close to what you know they already like. Also, if you are trying to put a message accross (do you love the girl your making a mix for, is it a mix for a mate for when they go to football...etc) make sure the songs put that message accross.
I think playing to a crowed can be a difficult thing to do. Not being a DJ myself, but by knowing a few people who are, one thing I know is you cant please everyone.
A DJ friend of mine, who shall rename nameless because I dont do plugs, told me he had become sick of people requesting songs.
He was once asked to put on something that this particular punter could "dance to". The vibrations coming out of the speaker at the time? James Brown.
So I can understand his gripe, but I guess the best way of looking at it is you arent going to please everyone with your choice of music - the world is full of idiots, and playing for them in mass numbers must be difficult.
He also told me he became sick of playing the tupes of gigs that required him to play to the numbers, playing the obvious tracks - KoL, Rhianna, Lady GaGa.
I have always thought a DJ would be a great job, but only if you could play the songs you wanted to play!
I would offer that as advice to anyone wanting to make a mix of songs either for themselves or for someone else; if you dont enjoy it while your making it, if you dont really like the songs your including in the mix, then the mix will probably end up a bit crap.
Obviously your not going to put songs in a mix for yourself that you dont particularly like, but if its for someone else or for a party or your putting together a DJ set, try and cater to the audience but dont drift away to far from what you personally like - otherwise whats the point?
The songs need to flow and grab the listeners attention. You can ruin a mix of songs by including the wrong song at the wrong time. This is something I constantly do when I make a mix.
usually when I put a mix of music together its at a social gathering of some sort, whether it be a big house party or just a small group of mates playing street fighter 2 turbo.
I will put a mix together, trying to take into consideration my own set of rough rules but there is usually 1 or 2 songs that when they come on i think "damn, that doesnt fit at all".
Shit happens.
But an easy way around this is by listening back to your mix an hour or so after making it. This will usually give you chance to hunt down any stinkers that you overlooked; "I knew it wasnt a good idea to include a Toto song..."
Like a good a album, a varied mix of songs can put you in a specific "place" while you listen to the music.
And when you have made it yourself, even better.
Can this blog be considered a lesson? A lesson in making a mix tape?
What did we learn? Tapes are extinct.

Heres some music.
A look at some other reviews...
Think I may of poured on the praise a bit to much for the Black Lips album.
"amazing vocal harmonies" - not amazing, its just two of the band members singing to good affect.
But i dont care, it was the albums fault - it puts you in a good mood. Whereas on The Arctic Monkeys album didnt put me in that "place" which is probably why I was so critical of it at times.
Speaking of that album, I havent gone back and listened to it much since reviewing it which isnt a great sign.
I was interested to know how it would be seen in the eyes of the "pros". I had a feeling it would split the opinion of fans but really didnt know how the mass media would approach it; could we see a Monkeys backlash? The only way to find out was to have a root around for some reviews.
So this is how both albums ive reviewed this week are holding up with the music press.
Arctic Monkeys - Suck It And See
Spin magazine give it a very respectable 8/10 saying they have combined the best of there 2 previous sounds (the punky raw aggression of there debut and the "sludgier" rock of humbug.)
http://www.spin.com/reviews/arctic-monkeys-suck-it-and-see-domino
Both Mojo & Q magazine agree with spin both agreeing with the laters score and deeming the album to be there best since there debut.
Uncut however only score the album a 6, making sure they dont poo-poo it to much and describe the songs as "beautifuly played and produced"
Black Lips - Arabian Mountain
Obscuresound.com have given the album an ok score of 6.5/10 (the .5 isnt really needed is it you picky fuckers?). Although they agree with me that the album is extremely fun and also site "Dont Mess Up My Baby" as the best song on the album, they deem some of the songs to be "filler".
Spin Magazine give the album 7/10, thats 1 less than the Arctic Monkeys for those of you who struggle with numbers. I would of gone the other way round if anyones interested.
"In the hands of dapper producer Mark Ronson, the glibly sloppy, lo-fi brats are almost sculpted into garage-punk sophistication, adding extended psychedelic guitar lines, fleshed-out percussion, even retro-soul sax."
Q mag go one better and deem the album to be a fine collection of raibid pop-punk gems. 8/10
So in summary....both albums are pretty good. Go and get em. Black Lips one is better though. Trust me.

The Black Lips - Arabian Mountain
The second of the 2 albums I have championed in the last month or so is the 6th studio album by Atlantas Black Lips. After giving a track by track description of the Arctic Monkeys latest offering, I thought it was only right to do the same with The 'Lips.
Since giving my run down on Alex Turners lot, I have since listened back to it a few times and my opinion hasnt really changed on it. I guess 3 listens of an album is all you need to get a feel for it and offer an opinion. By all accounts this is the number of times most critics will get to hear an album before being asked to write 500 words about it. So that makes me a proper critic? Yeah?
Yeah.
This is the first time the band will of worked with a producer, in this case its Mark Ronson. Not Rick Rubin, Jack White or Josh Homme. No, its the super slick Mark Ronson of Amy Whinehouse fame (Back In Black was the album that lead them to him).
Early signs have been good with the promise of more fuzz and a cleaner sound which is to be expected when working with someone so polished.
So here we go, The Black Lips - Arabian Mountain
Family Tree
Things get underway with a this little number - the sound of Wreckless Eric featuring on a Quentine Tarantino film. At least thats what it sounds like to me. Excited by that? You should be - Its a rip roaring start to the album. The Lips are back.
Modern Art
The first track that we heard before the albums release Its been knocking about for a few weeks now. Xylophones and a theremin feature in the brilliantly memorable chorus. You turn around and you don't know where you've been/You look up at the glass dome and the room beings to spin/Let's go out and find the ocean 'cause I think we need a swim/Turn around, start it over, let's begin
Spideys curse
A song about spiderman by the sound of the lyrics. There is a hint of xylophone in the back ground underneath a beautful lead riff. Its a lazy, almost sigh of a song that highlights the softer side of the band. If they ever had one...
Mad Dog
Sounds restrained with a lazy sax offering a simple hook that the song is based around. Nice vocal harmonies that are cleaner than on other 'Lips albums. This is a clear indication of working with an actual producer.
Mr Driver
This one sounds like its barely holding on. Imagine being far to whacked out and barely being able to make sense of reality but somehow managing to saunter accross the dancefloor without falling over to offer some "abstract" dance moves that just about come off. Thats this song. Its so close to stopping in its tracks and falling to the floor in a drunken drugged out mess, but it marches forward like the devil posessed. Emily Mackay from NME wrote, I swear one of the lines is “my pecker’s long/Got me feeling strong/When I sing this song and I smoke this bong.” I really hope I’m right.
I think she is. Which is brilliant.
Bicentenial Man
A sense of fun creeps back in here with a toe tapping beat that moves the album along nicely. Another example of Ronsons influence is on show here with clean and definate vocals that are instantly singable. My only critisism here is the song isnt long enough. The Lips have never outstayed there welcome when it comes to track length but at 2.19mins I felt as though there was another minute of music here that was missed out on. However, the 2.19min we do get is a surftastic boogie thats will get anyone moving.
Go Out And Get It
The fun continues here, its nothing other than that - dumb fun. I again have to concur with Emily in that this is sounding like a great summer album.
Raw Meat
Half way through the album and the fun continues here. A chorus made up simply by a band member half whistling half screaming interrupted occasionaly by "oh babys". And before you know it, its over. 1.48 min of flower punk energy.
Bone Marrow
Wow, Mark Ronson is all over this song. It works fantastically, the simple clap that gives us our beat is joined by a throbbing bass and some lovely lead guitar. This could be a single and actually do well which is not something this band has ever been about! A theremin, which has popped up a few times already on the album rears it summery head again and the song is finished off by some "uh oh ohs" and then its gone. Awesome.
The Lie
Sounds almost like Stairway To Heaven until it kicks in and we have another toe tapper which they all seem to be in there own way. Unlike the previous 4-5 songs, this one is a little darker like the first few tracks but you cant help nodding your head stamping your foot along to these songs. And whats this, a guitar solo? A proper one, one that isnt just part of an on going chorus, this is actually a fully blown solo/wig out that sees out the final minute of the song thats not to disimilar to Bring It On Down by Oasis.
Time
This song is so close to a West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band (yeah theyre a real band) song that ive had to go and dust it off so you can hear it.
Again, the song is quite restrained for the 'Lips. The dirt from there previous albums has gone and what we have now is a cleaner, more precise record than anything theyve done before. Dont see this as a bad thing, there instrument work and harmonies are probably more powerful for this reason and the songs are given a bit more space to move around in. Such as the ending here, instruments are stripped away and we are left just with the beat which leads us into the next song perfectly
Dumpster Dive
Exile On Main St Rolling Stones here. Honky tonk piano and some very Jagger esq singing propells this 2 min ditty forward. Like nearly all the songs here its gone in an instant with another little 15-20 second ending that was dusted with some nice productional touches siuch as the small stabs at piano keys that beautifully see out the song.
New Direction
They definately havent gone in a new direction! Here we have another prime example of the 60's garage rock influence that you swear you have heard before. FUCK ME this is a fun album.
Noc-A-Homa
Massive chorus for this one, lifts the song in a big way and could be somethin else live. I hate to use the pun, but they have knocked a hommer here...
God, I hate myself for saying that.
Dont Mess Up My Baby
"You smoked all my dope, chased a rainbow & then you sang a song....You drank all my beers, picked some flowers and things were going strong..."
This song is actually beautiful. the closest thing they come to to previous songs such as "I'll be with you". Amazing vocal harmonies going on during the chorus. One of the highlights of the album for sure.
You Keep On Running
Last song on the album and all the fun thats gone before is completely evaporatesd by some vintage 'Lips psych. A sprawling 4 minute trip to the depths of despair is unleashed on us like a nasty trip.
This was recorded using a real human skull (a mic was put inside the skull to create the spooky effect - seriously).
Its like being at a party thats passed you by to quickly and before you know it its the end of the night and the mother of all come downs kicks in while you notice the bird you like has fucked off with your best mate and as the lyric goes "...there is no where to hiiiiiiiide".
VERDICT
This is a seriously fun album full of memorable harmonies and choruses that stay with you long after the albums finished.
Its solid from start to end, so solid infact that its difficult to pick out stand out tracks. As soon as you think to yourself "that one, thats my fave" the next song quickly comes along and makes you rethink things!
I dont think The'Lips should worry about working with a producer anymore because this is a big big success.
On first listen the lads have given us something seriously good to brighten up our wet summer.
Since giving my run down on Alex Turners lot, I have since listened back to it a few times and my opinion hasnt really changed on it. The Arctic Monkeys - Suck It & See
After several months of mentioning the forthcoming release of Suck It And See on this blog, I thought I should discuss what im hearing seeing as I am currently listening to it.
I listened to it earlier, and it sort of passed me by, now its got most of my attention so a track by track discussion is in order.
Recorded in LA, this is the Monkeys' second "American" album after Humbug was recorded out in the Joshua Tree desert. This is something that has rattled some of the UK fan base (the hardcore knuckle draggers anyway, the people who buy 2 records a year, one of them being Now Thats What I Call Music vol 892).
I couldnt care where its recorded. As long as it sounds good...
1 - Shes Thunderstorms
Interesting start, in that its quite an understated opener. Will be a grower (much like the album after another listen). The song has a familiar feel to it that i cant quite put my finger on. There is a 90's Britpop and a west coast american rock feel to the song. This is something that runs through out the entire album which is why certain songs, such as this one, sound familiar after only 2-3 listens. Its a nice enough start but the song never really takes off.
2 - Black treacle
This sounds like it could be an old Blur b-side. The chorus soars quite nicely but even the bouncy rhythem of the bass cant help the rest of the song from dragging its heals. Not that its a bad song per say, its just a bit pedestrian. That chorus though - *swoon*.
Its been a mellow start, Alex Turners croon remains, but this time surrounded by 60's jangle rather than 70's heavy metal.
3 - Brick By Brick
Things are picked up with Brick By Brick. This has got some really mixed reviews from fans/trolls on the interweb. It sounds like an aggresive surfer theme tune, for people to surf aggresivly to. Possibly. And there is another chorus that soars along in a simple catchy kind of way. Alex Turners delivery of the chorus is one of the only times he removes himself from his new crooning vocal style he developed on Humbug. All of a sudden its that sheffield chav from 5 years ago, and its nice to hear
4 - Helicat spangled shalalalala
Worryingly sounding like "arena rock" in the same ilk as the more recent KoL shit. Unlike KoL though, there are some interesting lyrics. Not so much modern day city life poetry we have come to expect from Turner, more like throw away gems such as "give me another fuckin shalalalala.."
Maybe theyre not taking themselves too seriously? So far the whole album has felt light and fun.
I get the impression Turner has grown tired of writing about standing in line at chip shops after a night out in Sheffield. I also get the impression hes sick of people constantly praising him for his use of lyrics. Its as if hes gone into the album sessions with the mentality of "i couldnt give a shit what anyone thinks, im going to talk cod shit for a bit because its a bit of fun".
I dont think these songs are to be taken to seriously or heavily analysed. The album title suggests Turner and the band have made an album they know isnt going to be everyones liking, especially hardcore fans of the first 2, but they dont really give a shit what me and you think.
And for that I salute them.
5 - Dont sit down cos ive moved ya chair
Wow, this knocks ya socks off after the first 4 songs have scurried off. Its a heavy fucker.
That origional riff is extremely similar to heavy psych bands of today such as ones mentioned on here, Black Angels & Blue Angel Lounge.
It spits venom at you for 3 beautiful minutes then disapears. Lovely.
6 - Library Pictures
Another song full of random almost abstract lyrics about curly straws, dog shit rock n roll and an entire 10-1 countdown. There is a lovely change midway through with alex turner singing those lazy lyrics in a lazy croon - gives everything a very laid back fun feel even when the song is bookended by quite an aggresive punk song.
7 - All my own stunts
They have some pretty bad ass grooves popping up all over the album, unfortunatly they can get lost in amongst the numerous changes in direction. This song could of benefited from someone just whispering in the ear hole of Alex, "mate, focus on that riff. This one doesnt need a change up for the chorus, just keep it grooving". That doesnt happen. Instead someone has said "shoehorn in as many changes in direction as possible because that will please everyone."
Should of called me. I would of told him what to do.
Half way through and so far we have had a mellow start followed by a rip roaring second act, but the whole thing seems slightly scattered. The easy going vibe is often disturbed by a sudden change in direction that sounds slightly forced to incorporate everything they came up with during the recording.
8 - Reckless serenade
this is the start of the second half of the album. After a mellow start and then an aggresive change in direction this is change back to the mellow 60's sound, but its far more instant than anything else on the album other than maybe dont sit down..
Its meandering jangle and discreet vocal harmonies are extremely easy on the ear. Its sort of like listening to floursecent adolescents not so chavvy mate.
9 - Piledriver waltz
This song featured on the Submarine ost but as a far more stripped down acoustic version. I thought the added production might ruin it - Im undecided on that after 2 listens, but its still i lovely song to melt the hearts of gimps everywhere.
It really is nice, the chorus is positivly gorgeous, and the lyrics are instantly lodged in your brain box. I wonder what was up with the waitress?
The images it creates are no longer of rainy sheffield however. Instead its an american diner at the heartbreak hotel. I wonder what the hardcore english fans will think of this? Oh, theyve sold out. Gone american. Thats probably what some will think. The rest of us can just enjoy a great song.
10 - Love Is A Laserquest
Best name ever. Best song on the album if you like pretty boring songs
11 - Suck It And See
I dont know about this...
Its nearly great but then isnt. There are some nice hooks and some hum-able harmonies, but this song and quite alot of the album sounds like a poor mans asteroid4 which is a band that has mastered this particular sound. Although I admire The Monkeys for attempting to change there sound, for me they have held onto there past work to much for this to work consistantly.
Where as the lyrics have a dont give a shit atitude, I feel that this wasnt entirely the case in the studio. I could be wrong, but this song atleast feels over cooked.
12 - Thats where your wrong
Another lovely guitar hook to kick off the last song on the album but it then starts to sound like The Charlatans song, Oh Vanity.
Its quite a weak end to the album in that it doesnt leave you wanting more or give you any reason to go back and listen to it again.
So thats Suck It And See after 3 listens. A nice, but slightly underwhelming trip through the bands current influences which seem to be West Coast 60's rock.
Its not the album it promised to be and I have no doubt it will split fans opinion. The interesting thing will be what the critics do with it. Since there first album they havent really come under much scrutiny from the british media which is strange when you consider the bands attitude towards them.
Will they go for the laid back hazy sound, or will it be passed off as a lazy attempt at 60's pop that falls flat?
For me its a mixture of everything I have said. Some good. Some average. Some bad.
Its nice, but nothing really more than that. It simmers, it never boils. And that could be its downfall.
However, it is raining right now. Maybe the sun needs to be shining to apreciate this more.... Maybe we should all move to LA?
I listened to it earlier, and it sort of passed me by, now its got most of my attention so a track by track discussion is in order.

Charlie Sheen makes a song
"Winning", the new song by Charlie Sheen featuring Snoop Dogg & Rob Patterson (the guitarist from Filter) went online last night.
I actually enjoyed it! Much like I have enjoyed everything Charlie Sheen recently, but its quite difficult to pin point where exactly he features on the song...
Maybe he was to busy smoking, because according to Mr Dogg he was to busy doing that to even have time to win.
And yes, that Carmen Electra at the start of the song.
I dont know why I like it, Snoops rap isnt exactly vintage and its full of auto tune.
Maybe its the image in my head of Charlie Sheen running around the recording studio off his barnet on "winning". I bet it was him who included the tiger roar at the start, cos of the tiger blood fiasco....clever.
Quincy Jones aint got shit on Charlies production skills.

New Mark ROnson produced Black Lips songs
"Flower Punk" is the type of music the Black Lips have been making the best part of 10 years. Its a term they coined themselves and it sums up there music pretty well.
The 60's jangle is always there but delivered with ruthless punk venom. There music is under produced, rough around the edges but bursting with enthusiasm.
There live shows are infamous with dead animals, male nudity and various bodily fluids often included in amongst a set list of ferocious 3 minute pop songs.
So with that being said, it came as a suprise when news broke that "mega producer" Mark Ronson was taking the helm on there new album "Arabia Mountain" due for release on June 6th.
Fans of the group, such as myself, would be forgiven in thinking he could mess with there sound to much.
I love there garage band sound, it works for them, and the idea of a big producer adding horns, drum loops, multi layering of tracks, vocal distortion, nipples, amy whinehouse and a host of other things could end up ruining the bands sound.
On the other hand, this will be The 'Lips 6th studio album so they can be forgiven for trying to change things up a bit. It might even lead to some mainstream attention.
Fans need not worry though, because on first listen they still sound very much like the band we love with an added lick of paint that takes nothing away from there sound, just freshens it up a bit.

Why Noel gallaghers album is going to be better than anything Oasis put out in the last 10 years
Word has it Noel is currently in LA recording his solo album which comes as a great suprise to any fan of The Chief who only the other month declared it would be a while yet longer before he was to start work on the as yet untitled project.
Proof.
This is good news. Especially if he continues to write the sort of songs hes s been writing over the last 10 years or so.
As time went on with oasis Noel let the other members chip in with songs of there own.
What this highlighted was that Noels songs were as good as you first thought they were, and up against the other efforts it really showed.
He also began to take more of a lead with his own songs, by this I mean he started to sing more of his own songs which gives us a bit of insight into what his new album could possibly sound like.
Here are a few highlights that since the turn of the century featured on Oasis albums that were writen by and sang by Noel.
Mucky Fingers - taken from the album Dont Beleive The truth. Noel goes Dylan with an anti america theme running throughout. This song fades out and then was origionaly planned to go into the next song, swolen hand blues.
Swollen hand Blues...
This made it on as a b-side. cant remember which single it featured on, but bar a few iffy lyrics, this is a superb tune.
Bluesy psychodelic rock is the running theme so far, this song was the soundtrack to there 2005 tour documentary by the same name, lord dont slow me down
The next 2 songs come from the album Dig out your soul, the final oasis release and the album that split up the band. Noel really cut away from the other band members in this album and you can hear it in his songs. Hes reaching for something else that was away from the Oasis sound.
He has become great friends with serge from Kasabian over the years and Noel himself has mentioned that Serge has introduced him to a whole host of new artists that are obviously making an impact on the songs Noel is writing.
High Horse Lady followed by Falling Down
I thought I would include some of the Falling Down remix. Its 20 mins in total and completely and utterly mind blowing.
and here is the man himself explaining a little bit about the ghuys behind it.......and yet more evidence to suggest he was burnt out with creating the "OAsis sound". Noels now looking to do something different.
Finally, here is a demo that leaked a few years back. Its a bit more of a classic Noel song. Big chorus, catchy as hell, sounds like you have heard it before etc etc...
But its great.
I wanna live a dream in my record machine...
So there we have a small selection of songs by the great man that have featured on some Oasis releases over the years.
There are far more to go through such as the importance of being idle, but im going to leave it there and enjoy the sun for a bit.
Sounds promising wouldnt you say? we could have a bluesy psychedelic mash up with some massive choruses.
Just as long as we arent served up 12 tracks resembling she is love and force of nature we should be just fine.
Enjoy the sun kids

More new songs from the Monkeys and a few other things
Well this album sounds like its gonna be a bit good........
and we have already heard this one...
should be a belter. A much heavier and darker sound than there first two albums but the wit and charm remains that some may argue was missing from there 3rd, Humbug.
Die hard fans of there first album will probably moan, "its to american......its to heavy.......why havent they done there first album again, just slightly different......whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.............whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy......"
But they will just have to get used to it.
Genuinely looking forward to this album, which couldnt be said about the other big hitters that have been released so far this year, such as the strokes, beady eye.....elbow............erm, the streets.....
So anyway, other than the new Arctic Monkeys stuff I have also been listening to (is it me, or has this blog turned into a bastardised version of Jessies Diet from the fast show?) a German band called "Blue Angel Lounge".
Championed by the likes of Anton Newcombe, they are making a name for themselves on the psych scene on both sides of the atlantic.
They are similar to American bands such as The Black Angels, very psychodelic with an ominious drone throughout there music. Its atmospheric stuff that i can only imagine would sound epic live.
Speaking of performing live, these lot (who to the best of my knowledge are still unsigned), had to litterely beg for donations to get them to America to play the Austin Psych Fest.
Follow this link where you can see whether they managed to raise enough cash to get them to the gig. Yet another great little story woven into the rock'n'roll fabric these bands continue to add to.
Its the type of music that belongs in a film dont you think? I will go back to my comparison with The Black Angels who I have always said create songs that sound like the soundtrack to the best war film that hasnt been made yet. Both bands have that dark, 60's psychedelic vibe that would work brilliantly - my opinion obviously.
But, that kind of brings me onto this other band I have listened to recently.
"This Will Destroy You" are a 4 piece from America (Texas to be exact) who make atmospheric instrumental soundscapes. And they are pretty good.
Here is the first song from there first EP that was released in 2006 (may aswell start from the top eh?). When I listen to them I find myself imagining what sort of film, scene or any random video footage these songs will fit into.
Whoever made this video, a good one at that, clearly thinks that this song would of fit nicely on the, "The Sky At Night with Patrick Moore"

fuckin what, fuckin what? fuck! fuckin what mate!? fuckin what?!
just thought i would do my best impression of wayne rooney to kick things off. its been a while and what better way but to immitate one of our nations most loved/hated heros/wankers.
in all fairness, wayne was only venting his frustration at earning £100k a week, shaggin colleen every other night and scoring a hat trick for one of the biggest football clubs in the world.
the rest of us only have to go to jobs we hate earning nothing but pennys and shagging nothing but your own fist.....but enough about marc stevenson, lets talk about some music shall we?
I am going to post a song i recorded months ago called ruby. its influenced by the silver apples song by the same name. its just me singing over some really simple guitar iin open d. i like it though, it has legs.
i am posting this because i promised some more songs from bucky lagrange and the museums. truth is i simply havent had the time to do anything over the last month or so. its been hardcore and not in a good way.
anyway, they song will be somewhere in this post so look out for it, download it, listen to it, judge it, tell me you love it even if your actually thinking "what the fahook is this shite? hes not even wrote a chorus......or a second verse."
foo fighters have a new album out. not heard it. its meant to be good. have a listen if you want, its up to you. but its meant to be quite good.
dave grohl is also the nicest bloke in rock..........according to the music press anyway. so no doubt it gets good reviews even if its nothing but a led zep rip off album. what? na, theyre ok.
there aint much happening right now to be fair. things aint the best in the world, i didnt win the grand national or the lottery so you can imagine how i feel. those poor people in those other countries that are having a bad time must be feeling a bit like me right now.
where is the band that sums shit up in one song? there isnt one right now, and there should be. in the words of delia, "where are you?!"
music isnt inspiring right now, or should i say new music. i was listening to some bob dylan today for the first time in months.
has there been anything released in recent times that hits as hard as these times are changing, like a rolling stone, tangled up in blue....fuckin......oxford town.
no.
bring back the protest songs.
im really sick of hearing dub step and bad pop songs passed off as rnb.
there is a massive market for good old fasioned rock/folk/anything guitar based. the problem is, it aint played anymore.
local radio stations should play local bands. they shouldnt be playing the same shite you hear on radio 1.
if you were watching telly and you were watching bbc 1 or sky 1, you wouldnt switch over to comedy central and happily watch the same programmes that are on the other channels (although in daves case, that is exactly what it is). so why are radio stations different? why do you hear the same songs and same shite being spoken by some cunt dj on dee 106.3 as you do on radio 1?
local radio stations should play local bands. let people hear whats going on in there area, give them a chance to hear whats going on outside the mainstream and give them a choice. there is no choice right now and there fuckin should be.
people say downloading had ruined the music industry.
rubbish.
people need to hear whats out there and new bands will do well, people like rock'n'roll and they always will do. blah blah blah im ranting now and im bored of it. you get my point? good.
heres a picture to break things up and keep you interested.
I tell you what, Wigwam, one of the songs off Beady Eyes album is really really good. Fair play Liam you have done well with 2 or 3 songs on that album. the rest is dire, but never mind.
Ive got a new song on the way, its called "I am a massive blob so give me a bastard job".
Sums up this country quite well.
The lyrics are, "jesus christ, whats the point. please skin me a massive joint. i dont want to try, in your industry of work, having some money is the only fuckin perk."
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
i did feature in 8 mile. i was the white one.
anyway, heres that song i was on about.

Double figures!
Well, seeing as i am now in double figures for "blog followers" (its only taken the best part of 4 months.......whatever) I thought I would treat you all.
Please listen to these songs. Summer is on its way, its time to feel good.
Hope you all enjoyed the Museums, there will be more to come in the coming weeks I promise. It will all be mind blowing.
Anyway, some songs and some words.......
What can you say about Kaleidoscope other than they made brilliant brilliant music that never got recognition it deserved at the time. If this song doesnt make you tap ya feet your dead inside.
Its been quite some time since a song has grabbed me like this has done over the last few days. Only just come accross "The Beach Fossils". They have a brilliant hazy laid back vibe going on which is perfect for the summer, but there is an undercurrent of melencholy that runs throughout there album which cuts through there music like screwdriver through a melon.
There album sounds alot like this song, its all quite similar, they defo have there own sound, but it never grates. Basically, if you like this song, get the album.
Wire - they are still going strong and still sound fresh. I have all there albums on my hard drive but only have there first 2 (this is from there 2nd album - Chairs Missing) on my ipod. There is just to much quality music to get through at the moment! This is them sounding there most "poppy" but they can punk out with the best of them. Any fan of punk music, anyone who apreciates english guitar music, or anyone with a soul should look into these lot. Start with there first 2 albums and go from there.
The Beat Happening. These lot, along with The Brian Jonestown Massacre, are a band which made me realise that ANYONE can make music. you dont need to know what a Q sharp bar chord is, just do it.
Theres 4 for you all. If you enjoyed any of them, look up the band, they are all great - trust me. Plenty to sink your teeth into.
Homework for this week....find out what a Q sharp bar chord is.

Bucky Lagrange & The Museums - first listen
Here it is then, the new demo recorded by Bucky Lagrange & The Museums. The working title is, "Japan had a tsunami". Not offensive.
Its a work in progress with the singing and ending needing sorting out, there is an extra min or so of the song to be added on at the end which is nice but not finished.
The "band" have also just recorded a new song, written today, on the spot, and recorded in an hour. I liked it when I started but now, I gotta say, I hate it. ha.
Anyway, heres first listen of The Museums....

Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya
Another day another hangover another blog
I mentioned a review....
The Charlatans performed live in wrexham the other day. it was an acoustic performance with a more electric encore.
The venue was packed, really full, quite an energetic crowd that kind of fell flat during the gig. the atmosphere was quite strange. I dont think the acoustic music of the band suited the venue or the crowd.
The band were solid, most of the songs sounded strong in there new stripped down versions but they were lost to a crowd that was expecting something a bit more high tempo.
Cant be arsed saying much else about that. It was a good night.
Arctic Monkeys have revealed there new album name, tracklisting and release date.
"Suck It And See" will be released on June 6th. Heres the tracklisting...
'She's Thunderstorms'
'Black Treacle'
'Brick By Brick'
'The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala'
'Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your Chair'
'Library Pictures'
'All My Own Stunts'
'Reckless Serenade'
'Piledriver Waltz'
'Love Is A Laserquest'
'Suck It And See'
'That's Where You're Wrong'
Stupid stupid name for an album, the song titles sound interesting though...
Looking forward to it.
Jarule is gonna go prison for 2 years for gun posession. Hahahaha. What a goon.
However, it wont be for a few months because the judge is giving him time to sort out his taxes and finish his album. What a joke.
Heres a new song that will be featuring on the album which is called "The Renaissance Project"
Jesus Christ....
So anyway, moving on...
The Strokes have an albuum out in a week or two, which is called "Angels". Various band members have mentioned how difficult it was to record, how there is tension running through the band and that, basically, it aint been much fun being The Strokes recently.
Now i quite liked there last album, First impressions Of Earth, which was released a staggering 5 years ago. It wasnt brilliant, but it was ok. The trouble with The Strokes is they basically did everything they needed to on there first album. They have been chasing that ever since and in my opinion, they wont ever get close to it.
Julian Cassablancas, the lead singer incase you were wondering, released a solo album in 2009 which was very promising and I can see him giving up on The Strokes if they fall on there arse with "Angels". It sounds like they might be on the way out judging on the interviews etc....
Anyway, heres a new song by them. Underwhelming I think is the word your looking for...
Is it just me or does that sound like a Coral b-side or something?
tired.
Ive been listening to a band called Black Ryder recently. Quite good. Sound like BRMC/spacemen 3/Mazzy Starr ish.
If you dont know about those bands you can hear them here, here and here
And you can listen to some Black Ryder now....
Not got much else to say for now, speak to you again soon.

The Charlatans - Live
They played accoustic, it was average
I am fuckin mullered, I will write this properly later.

Forgot about this, Arctic Monkeys have a new tune....
I forgot to mention this in my earlier post, but The Arctic Monkeys have released a new song on there official website, complete with video. The song is called "Brick By Brick" and you can hear it right now...
What do you think?
I personally love it. Got a great 70's american feel to it. Nice jangly guitars, cracking middle 8, quite catchy. its a buzz.
I have read a few comments left by fans on a few other blogs and also on youtube. The general consensus is the lyrics are weak and the song sounds to "americany".
There are also quite a few comments mentioning there 3rd album "humbug", how it was a massive let down and that this new song is to similar to the sound from that album.
I fucking LOVE the monkeys for this. When I heard humbug I thought to myself that this is an album that will piss off at least half of there hardcore fan base. There were no songs about standing in line at the chippy, drinking a 6 pack of lager and getting a taxi home. They did that on there first albums. They were 17-18 year old lads. They were writing songs that mirrored there lives at the time.
What is the point of writing more songs like that when you have already done it and they are no longer relevent to you?
No, im happy with the (slightly) new direction. Will anyone else? Fuck knows. I dont think Alex and the other 3 will give 2 shits. They made it big on there first album, they have nothing to prove and they are making music for them.
Good lads.

General musings
Will be seeing The Charlatans play an acoustic gig tomorrow night, should be good if this performance is anything to go by (try and ignore Tim Burgess' dodgy barnet)...
Review will be on here the following day if I feel up to it.
Beady Eyes album didnt get to number 1....
Hardly a surprise really. Liam Gallagher mentioned that it was "a reality check" when there first single "The Roller" only made 31 in the charts.
This will be another blow to his ego, and probably more damaging. This is the first time he will of featured on a studio album that hasnt made the top spot in the UK.
All of the Oasis albums made number 1....
Beady Eye only made #3
A sign of the times? Maybe. Albums, especially rock albums simply dont sell like they used to. same can be said for singles. Foo Fighters released there new song last week and it didnt make the top 20.
The Foos wont be phased by this. there album will more than likely go number 1, and even if it doesnt there tour will be MASSIVE and will make up for any short comings in the charts.
Beady Eye dont have it so easy. They are only just starting to gig and even though the clips on youtube suggest they can put on a decent show, its going to take some time before they are matching the crowds Oasis played to around the world.
Time will tell, but its been a bumpy ride so far for Liam and co.
I wrote a song today. Its called "Cheese Shoe". A working title, sure, but the song sounds good. Ive got a few now. Some I like, some will be good once theyve been beefed up, some I now actually hate, but one way or another, there is an EP emerging that could sound fuckin useless to everyone else but I will like it.
I will eventually post some on here but they need finishing before I unleash them on your unsuspecting ears.
Dirk Kuyt has emerged as the LFC dressing room DJ. He plays the likes of Kings Of Leon and The Killers by all accounts.
He can play whatever he wants as far as im concerned - as long as we keep winning.
I personally couldnt see myself getting ready for a massive game against the like of Man Utd with Sex On Fire or Mr Brightside playing in the background, but we are talking about footballers here. Nani and co will of been shitting bricks at the sound of KoL's "Notion" blaring down the hallways of Anfield....
Maybe not.
At least Dirks not attempting to make his own music....
I dont think John barnes has anything to worry about...
Boardwalk Empire, the new HBO production starring Steve "im in everything thats good usually playing a small role but steeling the show" Buscemi, uses my fave band The Brian Jonestown Massacres song "Straight Up And Down" for its opening credits.
Hopefully this leads to a bit of recognition for a band that truly deserves it. More people should know about them.
Sorry about the second vid fucking up a bit around the 2 min mark, only a small blip. Good performance tho innit? Especially the last 5-4 mins. Brilliant jam. If you like the show, enjoy this song, please check out the album its from, Take It From The Man
If you like the Rolling Stones, you will like this. I promise.
Phil Collins has quit music. Praise the fucking lord.
He has apologised for being so successful...
"I'm sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that. It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me, I don't think anyone's going to miss me."
HA!
What a cunt.
And get this, he considered killing himself.

Cheers Phil, thanks for everything. You can rest easy that although people may not miss you, they will certainly remember you...
Your influence on todays youth is there for all to see. Hahaha.
I especially love the comments left on youtube, personal favourites being...

""In ur description it says he died at 75 and his 65 year old arms couldnt take the drumming. If your going to make a fake video at least put the same thing. And no dumbass hes 59 alive and well he writng a book."
HAHAHAHAHAHA! ...his 65 year old arms couldnt take the drumming. Brilliant.
The full description of the video is this;
Acclaimed rock musician Phil Collins passed away at the age of 76. Reports say that, during a rehearsal with his band, he drummed far too intensely, causing his brittle 65-year-old arms to fall off. While his band mates ran for an ambulance, it was too late. Phil Collins was pronounced Dead on Arrival.
If only.
Thats it from me for another day. I hope you have learnt something from todays blog, this sort of info is tough to come by but now you know so much more about how the world works and that all because of me.
But dont thank me, thank Dirk Kuyt.

Sun is Shining
Its March 1st, 2011, and the sun is shining away like a giant orange son of a bitch. Seeing as I am currently sleeping in a room made by at least 2/3's glass, the light shines in and wakes me up every day. Today was no exception but unlike most days, it actually became really warm in here, so much so I had to open the door to get some air in. For a split second it felt like summer which has made me listen to a few tunes first thing to continue the summer vibe.
Anyone who says they prefer winter to summer is a fool.
First up, this is Edward Sharpe and the magnetic zeros with a track called "home". Its been used on a few adverts so you might recognise it. Its a love song sang as a duet, and it has that brilliant uality of being totally familiar but completely new at the same time.
next up is The Young Sinclairs - Darling. This is a band that can only ever be listened to when the suns shining! every song is sun kissed and has a awesome hazy quality that reaks of california beach bums and hippies. Its basically The Byrds but not covering Dylan for a change
Asteroid#4 - Shes All I Need
Taken from the album "These Flowers Of Ours", this provided the soundtrack for summer '08 for me. If you like the sound of this song you will love the album, infact you will love the band. I will bet you money!
Happy mondays - bobs yer uncle
The Mun-deeees goin all sexy on everyone. When they were on form they were genius, and theyre dirty mancs so i suppose they fit the theme of the last few days for me.

Some reviews, I guess...
So Im back from football. We lost 4-1 and I didnt break any legs; not mine nor anyone elses. I didnt really want to if truth be told, It was all front. I didnt even score our 1 goal. I blame my team mates.
But seeing as Im back and have nothing to do right now I thought I would continue this thing. Writing that little bit of rubbish earlier has got me back on track...ish.
I havent really got much to talk about as far as music goes, I could post a load of obscure tunes but I dont think anyone really listens to them.
Infact, I dont think anyone even bothers reading this so what im going to do is review an album I earlier panned because its the lazy unimaginative thing to do, and as no one is reading or listening, I can do what i want.
So without further "Apu" (simpsons), heres my review of Beady Eyes - Different Gear, Still Speeding.
(a few posts ago I slated the tunes I had heard from the album, but left the door open for the band to proove themselves when the real deal came out - so this is that.)
Its hard to know where to start with an album thats been recorded by 4/5ths of the band I used to consider my favourate of all time. I would still say Oasis are probably the most important band within my lifetime, but its now easier to see there weaknesses for what they were. The fan boy shades have been taken off and I can now safely say that yes, they did peak on there first 2 albums (its hard not to when its those 2 albums), and yes, they released some pretty mediocre stuff post '97.
But one thing that became increasingly more evident the longer the band went on was the divide between noel gallagher and the rest of the band.
On there last 2 albums, Noel sang the majority of the songs he wrote. in the past, he wrote all the songs and Liam sang them, but the longer Oasis went on the Noel songs were almost halved on each record and the rest was filled in my the remaining band members.
On "Dig Out your soul", there last album, Noel wrote 6 songs and sang 3 of them. These were heavy, psychedelic numbers that were cutting loose from the old Oasis sound. the rest of the album paled in comparison, and by listening back to that album, you can hear the divide in the songs and it should of been obvious to everyone that Oasis were almost spent as a band.
So when Beady Eye came about, the 4/5ths of Oasis I would consider excellent musicians but weak songwriters, the alarm bells went off and I feared for the worse.
The first 3 songs that came about, The Roller, Bring The Light and 4 Letter Word, did not ease my fears. Infact, they left me feeling pretty numb with only 4 Letter Word being remotely interesting.
After listening back to those 3 songs when I got the album in full my opinion of the album opener (4 letter word) did change somewhat. Its Liam and co putting a big fuck off line underneath Oasis and starting again.
Liams vocals, as they are throughout the record, are excellent. Infact he probably hasnt sounded this good since the 90's. His aggression is there for all to hear as he snarls "nothing ever lasts....FOREVER" but rather than the croaky shouts of the more recent past, hes actually singing again.
And with the James Bond style strings and rumbling guitar, the album is off to a decent start.
Unfortunatly it doesnt contiinue down this road
"Millionare" is an jaunty accoustic number that skips along doing nothing in particular other than boast some pretty trippy lyrics about, of all peaople, Salvidor Dali.
"The Roller" is nothing but a mediocre pop song that rips off John Lennon and "Beatles & Stones" has one of the most cringeworthy titles in the history of music - and the song itself is another harmless but mediocre tune that wouldnt of even made it as an Oasis bside during there pomp.
One thing is for certain though, they arent trying to be Oasis and you have to applaud them for this. it would of been very easy to simply copy a formular that they know works but in all honesty, I think Oasis tried to do just that with there album "Heathen Chemistry". That was the sound of a band trying to sound like themselves, and other than a few exceptions (songbird & hindu times), it didnt work.
"Wind Up Dream" & "Bring The Light" are 2 examples of Beady Eye not trying to be Oasis. the honky tonk piano of bring the light is a million miles from anything Oasis did and its split opinion right down the middle. Some love it, others hate it. I still havent listened to it all the way through and I still maintain it should of been a 2 min song. It might work live though - who knows.
As for "Wind Up Dread", the only thing that grabs my attention is a nifty harmonica solo, but the song never elivates itself above "meh, its ooooooook I suppose...."
And that is the overall feeling I get from the album.
Its full of alright songs but there is nothing on here that makes you sit up and think, wow, whats this?!
Its also quite soft, which is no bad thing, but when you have heard Liam gallagher sing songs like "Morning Glory" all your life, you expect a bit more bollocks to an album hes in charge of.
Alot of the songs on here are accoustic ballads, heavily produced by Steve Lillywhite overloading them with strings and reverb to give certain tracks a psychodelic feel.
His production throughout is pretty much on the money but he cant do anything for songs like Liams 2nd attempt at bettering Songbird. "For Anyone" is quite offensive at just how poppy it is. I swear to god if I was told this was McFly or fuckin, Take That, I wouldnt be suprised.
liam does redeem himself though with the 2 long players on the record, both "Wigwam" and "The Morning Sun" clock in at over 6 mins and are in my opinion the albums highlights.
Wigwam is a soulful tale of a drunken walk home that builds up to 3 min psychodelic outro with Liam proclaiming that hes "coming up" complete with choir backing vocals.
"Morning Sun" is Liams sob story about Noel and the Oasis split, featuring some of his most personal lyrics.
"You'll never know, unless you try, your blinded by what/you idolise, I stand alone, nobody knows, the morning sun has rose.
Hes in my mind, hes in my soul, hes even in my/rock'n'roll. i stand alone, nobody knows, the morning sun has rose"
Now if thats not about Noel then im Tony McCarroll.
Its a fitting way to end the album, and it is actually quite beautiful.
However, its not enough to lift what was a very mediocre album from being just that, mediocre.
Im not suprised the album has got critics confused. Non of them seem to know what to do. they cant slag it off because its not all bad. For the most part its harmless fun that wont offend anyone. Not something I ever thought I would say about something Liam gallagher is involved in!
And at least Beady Eye have found a sound for themselves but whether that sound is to everyones taste remains to be seen.
What the album has done though, for all its faults, has shown that the 4/5ths of Oasis without Noel are happy, you can hear it in the songs cos theyre all so fuckin soft and cheerful! And they have well and truly put the ball in Noels court and I for one cant wait with what he returns.
This is where you would usually see a mark out of 10, or 5, or some gold stars, or a fuckin nipple.
But im just gonna leave it like this. Oasis fans will quite like this album because its Liam singing, and there are good songs on here.
Oasis haters, will hate it. Probably.
I think its very very average, boarderline poor if it wasnt for 4 letter word, wigwam and morning sun and I cant ever see me going back for a listen to "for anyone" or "stanidng on the edge of noise" and about 5 other songs on here......
I hope that helps you decide whether or not to download it illegally or not.
Peace & Love
