Some words on The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Over 20 years ago, Anton Newcombe formed the band that came to be known as The Brian Jonestown Massacre. For 2 decades Anton has lead this musical force through almost every Rock'n'Roll cliche imagineable. From break ups to bust ups, onstage fights and drug addiction, cancelled shows and walk offs - The BJM have been there, done it, survived it and then done it again.
There reputation as "bad guys of rock" was cemented when the 2004 documentary Dig! was released which chronicled the bands progress throuh 6-7 years. We saw the band at there very worst, but in a strange way this was seeing a band at there best. The band were laid bare for all to see. We could enjoy the madness and appreciate the genius.
Bands like this dont come along to often.
Sure, other bands and artists have gained much more in terms of critical acclaim/album sales etc, and other bands have matched the BJM in terms of outlandish rock'n'roll behaviour, but what The BJM, but Anton in particular, have over these other acts is a vision and motivation to move things forward.

The BJM are a throwback, there is no denying that. There most popular songs are Rolling Stones influenced blues rock featuring catchy hooks and memorable melodies. The 60's is everywhere in there music. The progressive, other worldly sound, The 2 minute pop songs, The use of 60's song titles reworked. Fuck, there last album was called who killed sgt pepper!
But this works.
The 60's was a time when nothing was impossible. It was a time when people could dream and those dreams could come true. Music progressed at a light speed and peoples attitude to politics, race, religion, peoples rights, sex, drugs and science seemed to develop and move forward at a rapid rate.
We went to the moon in the 60's using technology that today would be used to power a bog standard calculator school children deface every day in class. Thats what can happen when someone has an idea and makes it happen.
So it makes sense that Anton and The BJM are influenced by this period of time.

We are talking here about a band that was at the forefront of the shoegaze scene in the early 90's and one of the first to use the internet in the ways its used today.
Before Napster became a big deal and before it was closed down, Anton was sharing his music with anyone who "got it". Anton posted his entire discography on his website way back in the late 90's making all his music available to download and share for free.
He has never and probably will never "play the game" the way that "they" expect you to. Its one of the reasons his music will never get played on mainstream TV/radio, but its one of his main strengths to. By not towing the company line his record labels expected him to do (anoton now has his own indie label "a" records) has given him the freedom to do things his way.

Anton and the BJM were one of the first bands to be on MySpace, other bands were on it but Anton actually put his music on there free for everyone.
By doing this and allowing people to hear his music, Anton has opened up an entire new world of music for people that may not of known existed. Anton has created a scene that has now spread accross the globe; from bands like BRMC and The Warlocks from America, Anton has moved to GErmany & Iceland to help develop bands such as The Blue Angel Lounge & Dead Skeletons.
At the forefront of his scene is the message "Keep Music Evil" - the moniker from which i guess Anton lives his life. Keep Music Evil is a community of bands, artists, fans, writers and everyone inbetween who buys into Anton and The BJMS outlook on what music and art should be, a true expression of ones self.
Its the polar opposite of todays music scene. Its an escape from the mainstream that has become so terrifyingly polished and media driven that has seen the artistic vision disapear without trace.

i could be angry that radio, television and cinema are not only shallow and perhaps even toxic in their banality, maybe even feel pains of sadness for young people knowing that they will never have a chance to grow in an open minded stimulating enviroment full of exploration, and examples personal freedom...but you know what? the way it is is the way it is wanted...it's not like 10 year olds are demanding lady gaga and justin beiber...no,this is by design.you can not want for other what they do not want for themselves.

In 3 weeks time Anton & The BJM will release there 12th studio album; Aufheben.
An album which has been shared with the watching public over the last 18-24 months via Antons online live TV station - DeadTV. Yeah, he has his own TV show. Bono doesnt have one of those.
We have watched Anton in the studio recording, writing and producing this album from day 1. He has taken us on a journey with these songs, sharing his vision and how he gets there with everyone who is bothered to watch.
Every demo, every idea has been posted online publicly for everyone to comment on and get involved with. This has been another step forward as far as creating and recording music.
He isnt going to ask his fans to "pay what they want" - he was giving it away for free 15 years ago. He isnt going to ask his fans to pick the tracklist, people have been making mix tapes for 30 years. Hes going to do something new, and hes going to move things forward by inviting us into the process. We wont have a say on the final product, but we will of been a part of it.

What that final product is is yet to be heard, but the mixture of the old and new was there to be heard on the youtube demos.
We have a perfect blend of the electronic beats from the last album, the bluesy guitar from the early 90's, the experimental eastern/european vocals of the early naughties EP's and a menacing yet beautiful vibe that could be heard on the debut, Methodrone (yeah thats right, that drug that became trendy last year was the name of Antons debut in 1992)
Hes ahead of the game and its up to everyone else to catch up.
Chances are he will be too far ahead by the time people begin to realise, I just hope that the next generation can see through the glossy mess of The Xfactor and everything that goes with that, so bands like The BJM can influence a better musical future.
Either that - or use the technology we have at our disposal to actually DO something, rather than spying on each other or blowing the shit out of our planet. Just an idea.

Aufheben is released on May 1st
The BJM will be playing live this summer

07/07/2012 Shepherds Bush Empire, London
08/07/2012 The Ritz, Manchester
09/07/1012 o2 Academy, Birmingham

N.W.A - what were they yellin?

When me and my posse stepped in the house
All the punk-ass niggaz start breakin out
Cause you know, they know whassup
So we started lookin for the bitches with the big butts
Like her, but she keep cryin
"I got a boyfriend" Bitch stop lyin
Dumb-ass hooker ain't nuttin but a dyke
Suddenly I see, some niggaz that I don't like
Walked over to em, and said, "Whassup?"
The first nigga that I saw, hit em in the jaw
Ren started stompin em, and so did E
By that time got rushed by security
Out the door, but we don't quit
Ren said, "Let's start some shit!"
I got a shotgun, and here's the plot
Takin niggaz out with a flurry of buckshots
Boom boom boom, yeah I was gunnin
And then you look, all you see is niggaz runnin
and fallin and yellin and pushin and screamin
and cussin, I stepped back, and I kept bustin
And then I realized it's time for me to go
So I stopped, jumped in the vehicle
It's like this, because of that who-ride
N.W.A. is wanted for a homicide
Cause I'm the type of nigga that's built to last
Fuck wit me, I'll put my foot in your ass
See I don't give a fuck, cause I keep bailin
Yo, what the fuck are they yellin?

The Shins & Nas. Best buds

The Shins new album, Port Of Morrow, is out to purchase. I think it was released today. It might be next week? Either way, ive heard it and will therefor offer my opinion on it...

I may or may not of mentioned in an earlier post that im quite fond of The Shins.
They were the first of there breed - soundtrack friendly gay folk rock - which has inspired the likes of The Fleet Foxes and other softys.
So fair doos.
But its been 5 years since the Shins released an album. Thats a long time to be out of the game.
A long long time.....

5 years. The Stone Roses waited little over 5 years to release there second album and it bombed. Dr Dre has waited over a decade to release his 3rd album, and its already bombed.
They are the only 2 examples I can think of at the minute, but what im gettin at is that the longer you leave something the chances are you have a longer period of time to fuck it up.
And thats what The Shins have done.
The whole album sounds clean, safe, poppy and just a bit crap.
There are some nice little melodies knocking around , which you expect from this band, but they lack the slight edge that was a permanent fixture on past releases.
On there first 3 long players you got the feeling of excitement and adventure, and you were happy to be taken along for the ride. On Port Of Morrow you are bored of the journey after 3 or 4 songs.
The reason for this is unclear but I would suggest the departure of founding band members and using a producer whose best work has come in the form of Lily Allens "The Fear".
And maybe the songs just arent there? Even if all the slick production is stripped away, im not sure that this collection of tunes stands up on its own when put side by side next to there earlier work.
Its an album you find yourself wanting to like but ultimately giving up on it because when you listen to the Shins, it shouldnt be hard work. It should be effortless, easy and just, i dunno, "nice".
Port Of Morrow is like watching an episode of The US Office without Steve Carrell as the lead. Its still almost the same, there are some good moments that keep you watching, but you cant shake the nagging feeling that what your watching/listening to isnt as good as it once was.

I wouldnt say its a bad album, but its far from being good and it will take something quite drastic to make me want to listen to it again anytime soon. It probably deserves another chance to tap into my head, but im not in a giving mood and so The Shins can kindly fuck off for the time being.

I have just read Pitchforks review of this album, and they seemed to really like it. But what struck m about the review was the opening paragraph that listed several major events that have happened in the last 5 years. This particular line was interesting, "Pop music headed out to the club, mainstream hip-hop more or less went bust..."
I would of agreed with them had I not just listened to this, Nas' new tune. Enjoy.

Whats on its way?

2012 you cheeky little fucker, arent you full of suprises?

After the dirge that was 2011 I was hoping for 2012 to offer something...more. And thankfully thats exactly what its doing.

After nearly 2 years of demos, rants, messages, pictures, tweets and even more demos, Anton Newcombe & The Brian Jonestown Massacre have a new album coming out.

"Aufheben" which translates to "lift up" or "abolish" (a far better title and meaning than some previous titles) is due out on May 1st and is the first release in quite some time to feature some origional band members (other than Anton, obviously).
The bands constant line up changes has been well documented, and is now in excess of 50 members to of featured either on record or live.
However, over the last 4-5 years the bands live lineup has consisted of the same 7-8 members including founding members Matt Holywood and joel Gion.
In the studio however, Anton has worked with icelandic and german artists rather than the live outfit he takes on the road.
For this album however we see a return to the studio for Matt Holywood and also Will carruthers (spacemen 3, spiritualized) which has given the new songs a more "Jonestown" feel. It has also fueled speculation amongst fans that some songs from the new album will feature in the live setlist.
Whatever they choose to play live, it will be brilliant to see these guys on the road again.
Last time they played up here, the set was tight as hell and the misbehaviour we have come to expect was down to a minimum; they really felt like a tight nit band, stark contrast to how they were portrayed in the documentary "DIG!".
Now with the knowledge that Anton is working along side Matt & co in the studio again, and producing some of there best stuff for a good 5-10 years, its exciting times ahead for The BJM.

Aswell as that, Spiritualized have returned this year with a new album "Sweet Heart Sweet Light" due out soon (release date was pushed back, I think its due out April?) and a tour to boot.
Death in Vegas are currently on the road, playing Wrexhams Central Station in a matter of weeks.....

The Arctic Monkeys are turning out more and more stuff.... They dont seem to have an off button

Noel Gallagher is still on the road, taking his album all over the feckin place. Unfortunatly he has pushed back the release of his second album featuring The Amorphous Androgynous "based on the success of his first album". That makes no sense to me, but I guess when your Noel Gallagher you can do what you want?
Heres a taster of what that album has to offer. Release it now Noel for fucks sake....

What else.....
Beach Fossils had an EP out back end of last year so a new album should be round the corner.
The Shins defo have a new album on the way. Its been to long. Port Of Morrow (out March 23rd) will be the bands first release since 2007's Wincing The Night Away. New band members and a new label should mean a fresh new start for Zach Braffs best buds and im looking forward to some more soft ass puff rock

Word is MGMT are working on there 3rd album and I for one hope they go even more crazy. Take more acid lads, its good for you.
The Strokes are working on another album, following up last years Angels. I dont know about this to be honest, i cant really be bothered with the Strokes anymore, but they could suprise me.
Oh, and Craig David is in the studio.

Its just a feckin list.....

Just saw a list online of "The top 10 Sigur Ros songs"
A few comments left by people who had read said list were less than positive.
Its only a feckin list.....

Albums of the yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeear

Hate these lists. The only purpose they serve is to stroke the ego of its author.
"look how many albums i have lilstened to this year, i bet YOU havent heard these albums.......but I have."
These lists, unless written for smash hits, are usually full of nu wave or low wave or high flange grunge or whatever it is that happens to be flavour of the month(or year) for post grad art students/NME editors/Douche bags.
They arent what they claim to be, which is a list of great albums released in 1 calander year. If that was the case Beyonce wouldnt be 20 places higher than White Denim and PJ Harvey in Rolling Stones list....and Superheavy (the abortion project by Mick Jagger, Joss Stone et al) wouldnt be in it at all.
These lists are just an easy way to end the year for editors of music mags everywhere, an ego stroking device for music snobs and a way music labels can peddle there shit just before christmas.

Now I aint a post grad anything, nor am I a writer or editor for NME. I am one hell of a douche bag though, and with that I give you a pretentious list of albums you probably havent heard, but I have.

The worthy members of such an elite list will follow, but for now lets take a quick look at the musical landscape that was 2011.

It started off badly, as you might expect. Matt Cardle was number 1 in the singles chart. Remember him? (Remember the singles chart?) I have only just found out this person exists. He won X-Factor.
Take That were number 1 in the album charts only to be replaced 1 week into the year by Rhiannas album "loud"
Adeles second album was released a month or two later and is still number one.....it probably is somewhere anyway.
And whenever she wasnt number one, the top spot was filled by the likes of GaGa, Bouble and other idiots.

Away from, the top spot, Elbow released an album at some stage. I cant remember it doing any good. They suffered the same way Snow Patrol did. A band who didnt get much attention during there early career, gained massive critical and public praise for 1 particular album and then slowly faded away into every starbucks playlist this side of costa coffee.

Radoheads album was good. It was called King Of Limbs if i remember rightly. I enjoyed listening to it for free on youtube.
I cant remember if this was the album thom York let people have for free, or bid on like an auction, or exchange nails and hair for a copy........however they decided to flog it, i didnt buy it. so i guess it doesnt make the list.
Or maybe it does....who knows. Not even me. So how would you know. shut up.

REM released what was to be there last album - the universe didnt seem to notice.
Kings Of Leon also continued to butcher what was a great body of work when they released an album in march? Or february? I cant even remember what it was called but in one of there videos they were tryin to be some sort of white Jesus.

Away from stadium rock, somehow old school trance music made its way into hip-hop, killing the genre forever.
SOmeone else who tried to kill off hip-hop was Pink. Oh sorry, I mean "P!nk". She had a greatest hits out. Oh sorry, "Greatest Hits....So Far".
Gaga, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Jessie J, Rhianna, JLo, Britney spears and probably many many more female solo artists had stuff in the charts.
But no females in the shortlist for sports personality. Unlucky girls.
Saying that, pj harvey seems to be getting alot of plaudits for her album, let england shake. it is pretty good actually. but is it that good? i dunno, not listened to it for a while. is it as good as black keys? not for me. does that mean it aint worthy of being included? fuck knows.

Now, there is alot of soft 80's style stuff comin out of america at the minute and I cant really get on board with it. Stuff like The Antlers just doesnt float my boat. They are in all the other lists, but not mine.

Its difficult making this list while listening to Ted Nugent. Ted Nugent! So badass.

Miles Kanes album was a bit of a stinker if you ask me....It was alright but no more than that. If you own it, when did you last listen to it? And be honest. Months ago wasnt it. Cos it aint all that. A bit like The Arctic Monkeys album, grew on me for weeks but never quite made it into the realms of "this is a good album". It only just got passed "meh, its ok" before stalling and settling at "its ok, got a few great tunes.....cant remember what theyre called".
The Submarine OST however.....pretty great. 6 songs long, and theyre all great. and the version of piledriver waltz is better than the version that apeared on suck it and see.

(I wrote this about a week ago and I am just re-reading it for the first time before posting it. Since I wrote this I have actually listened to Suck It And see again, and its actually pretty decent boardering on the sublime. See what time does?)

Kasabians album was dreadful in my opinion. 4 albums in, 2 great, 2 poor. thats how I see it. Still a great band live, but on record they can really really piss me off.
Was the Strokes album any good? I think i listened to it once and then decided Julian Casablancas should just go solo and let the others do somethin else. Would benefit everyone.

The Vaccines are meant to be good. aint bothered with em.
The Foo Fighters had an album out....
so did Bjork
Florence and The Machine
Kate bloody Bush
The Horrors album is meant to be really good, and I heard some off it and I really liked it. Not listened to the album in full though, so Horrors fans, your boys aint on the list.
Jayz and Kanye had an album out. Eminem did to. Dr Dre.........didnt, which suprised no one.
Coldplay had an album out. I havent heard any of it. Is it any good?
St Vincent has been raved about by everyone, and i think its garbage. maybe i shouldnt do a music blog cos i clearly hate music.
ergh, what next. Bon Iver. Is it any good? Well, I cant get into it. So no, not on the list.
The Strange Boys had a great album out only the other month called "Live Music". i have heard it described as Exile On main St performed by a bunch of hoodies.
It is a good album, but I dunno, should it be in my list? What hoodies do they wear? Nike or Adidas? If its Fila or Elisse then they are in the list.

Amy Whinehouse died at some point this year, which was a genuine loss to music. She was a right div, but she could really fuckin sing.
She will be missed along with Chriostopher Hitchens, Gary Speed, Ryan Dunn, Heavy D, Steve Jobs (who died on my birthday - probably not what he will be remembered for), Macho Man Randy Savage, Elizabeth taylor, Nate Dogg, Smokin Joe, Henry Cooper & Pete Postlethwaite who all passed away this year. Not all of them involved in music, but RIP all the same. RIP everyone.

There was yet more Jagger related garbage. Swagger jagger was an actual song and there was also a maroon5 song about moving like jagger. jagger, as already mentioned, also released an album which was equally dreadful as the 2 songs just mentioned.
WilLIAM Elliot Whitmore had an album out.
So did Janes Addiction.
Glasvegas...
And to top things off, Hard-Fi had an album out this year.

Inbetween all of this there was some music I actually enjoyed released in 2011. Its hardly been a vintage musical year but even when things are so unbeleivably below average, there are always one or two shining becons.
And here they are, in all there glory, the 5-10 albums that managed to poke there heads out from beneath the quagmmire of cowell infested slurry that has been 2011.

The Beets (stay at home & let the poison out)
Anyone who used to watch Nickelodeon about 15-20 years agp should recognise the name but unfortunatly thats about as far as the Doug references go.
Both albums from this year are jam packed with 1-3minute rackets that grab you bby the collar and drag you back to a simpler, cooler time. The dirty garage sound has never sounded so good nearly 50 years since music like this became popular. And a band that draws there own album covers and has Carlito Cool on em must be great.

Black Lips - arabian mountain
I nearly didnt include this but its to much fun and im still listening to it a good 7 months on.
Extra polish has been added to the 'Lips dirty pop in the form of mark Ronson. A grammy award winning producer and a rag tag bunch like the Black lips sounds like an uneven fit but they seem to of worked brilliantly by striking a perfect balance between Ronsons catchy and clean production and the 'lips raw energy and rock'n'roll spirit.

black keys - el camino
Hit me like a ton of briacks when I first heard it. The first 5 songs alone make this a must have and, if it ever needed proving, the black keys have officially claimed the title of best rock outfit out there at the moment. The White Stripes are gone, but the 'Keys will be here for a bit longer we hope

noel gallaghers high flying birds

Yep. Its great. Its effortless. It is Noel Gallagher.
The production can sometimes seem a bit to much. The over use of strings can sometimes grate and having heard a few b-side form the singles its annoying that Noel has once again made mistakes when choosing his tracklist (Lord Shine A Light on me, bar the horrible title, is a stunning song and really should be on the album).
The intro for "death Of You And Me" alone is enough to make up for the albums downfalls, and with the promise of album #2 to be released in a few months, 2012 could be Noels year.

kurt vile - smoke rig for my halo
A hazy, folky trip into the mind of a bloke called Kurt.
This is not an album to put on and expect instant harmony within its 40 odd minute running time. It needs some of your attention and if you give it what it deserves you will be rewarded.
Simply lovely.

war on drugs - Slave Ambiant
The full imagining of last years EP (which made my list last year), Slave Ambiant is a brilliant mix of folk and krautrock that comes off sounding like Bruce Sprinstein meets NEU!
Each song seems to blend into the next that gives the album a certain atmosphere and drive. Even when it starts sounding dangerously close to early U2, its still fantastic.

white denim - D
Not quite in the same league as Black Keys, but pretty chuffin close. Anyone with an ear for blues rock or 1970's Americana will apreciate the layers upon layers of delicious music that shapes each and every song on here.

Wooden Shjips - West
Argubly there best album so far, I think its there 4th? there grooves seem to have more going on in them. They seem to progress more than in past efforts. Ah fuck this, they are the best psychodelic band around. End of.
This is music to get lost in.

The Arctic Monkeys & Alex Turner - Suck It & See & The Submarine OST
Contray to what I said earlier, Suck It And See is actually really good. And so is the Submarine OST. Turner has a knack for writing songs, which is good when your profession is writing songs.
His voice has developed into a wonderful croon rather than a sheffield scally on the piss and his way with words has become more sophisticated, less of the kebab shops and taxis home, more lost loves and soul searching.
On Suck It And See and Submarine he has written some of his best songs, songs that wont make every teenyboppers wet at the crotch, but songs you imagine he has always wanted to write, songs he wont get bored of playing and you wont get bored of listening to.
Dont beleive the hype.

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Scandalous
Smooth as snake shit and as rock'n'roll as they come. Imagine James Brown jamming with Bo Didley and you are on the right tracks. And if that doesnt sound like something good your a fuckin moron.

The Fleet Foxes album is a worthy mention. Its sophisticated folky shit that sounds bloody wonderful on the perfect day but sometimes like pretentious over stuffed shite - but mainly its good.
Thee Oh Sees latest album, castlemania, is a fantastic summery album with typical west coast vibes you would expect from those lot and PJ Harveys album Let England Shake is really really good, and probably should be on my list but im getting tired now.
The Strange Boys album is also worth a punt.

With that, im off for another month or so unless something comes up.
Hopefully 2012 will be a slightly better year, not just in music, but in everything that makes up our world.
2012 is the last year of the planets existance (according to the "experts"), so before the end lets hope we get a few more classic tunes to soften the blow.
Chow.

songs

Some songs then, new and old.
starting with old - a lost classic by the velvet underground.

The band is called smith, there version of "the weight" features on easy rider.
But this song is just verse=middle8-banging chorus-end. and its brilliant.

some new stuff.
new Mazzy Star ffs. its been 15 years! they aint changed one bit.

black keys new one. dancefloor filler.

back to the old. The Standells are considered one of the first punk bands. or pop/punk...... whatever. tthis was there only hit and its a banger.

One of my fave songs performed by Tina Britt. I prefer the obscure mowtown/northern soul versions of this song than steppenwolfs. just sayin like.

New direction by the Black Lips, from there Arabian Mountain album which was out earlier in the year. great video.

First of 2 Noel songs is his re-working of the classic Supersonic

Second Noel song is this bond themey monster. This doesnt feature on his High Flying Birds album so I assume its from his 2nd album which is out next year. the one produced by Amorphous Androgynous.

Speaking of Amorphous....

One of the best songs ever...

New Wooden Shjips. As terrifying and groovy as ever

This will put you in a great mood for the rest of the day
